Gammelskog (Old forest) is a more or less untouched forest. In an old forest there are trees of different kinds and of all ages. There are dead tree trunks that still stand up and "flames", tree trunks that are felled on the ground and slowly decompose. There are lots of fungi, herbs, insects, birds and other animals. Such a forest is vital for biodiversity. The areas of old forest have fallen sharply in Sweden during the 20th century. Only two percent of all productive forest land below the mountain range in Sweden is permanently protected and every year more old forest is harvested than is protected. https://naturarvet.se/gammelskog/om-gammelskog/
